Earth Day Events
Thanks
to all the members who came to our special members-only Earth Day
reception on Saturday, April 26, and to all the community members who
visited during our Earth Day Celebration on Sunday, April 27th. A
great time was had by all! This has become our signature annual
event and it was a good fund-raiser this year. Sincere
appreciation to our sponsors: KVAL, Unique Properties, Capella Market, Stash Tea, Emge & Whyte, Springfield Utility Board, and Rogue Ales (which were much enjoyed at the Members’ Event!) Special thanks to the City of Eugene Recreation Department for providing two shuttles and drivers (thank you, Jeff and Jen!) so participants could park at Spencer Butte Middle School and have a ride from there! We also are very grateful to the school for this arrangement. Please visit our website http://www.eraptors.org/ed2008.htm
to see more photos and the list of talented and generous artists and
other local businesses who contributed to our silent auction and
raffle, as well as the food for our members reception and the wonderful
entertainment!
Special thanks to Karen Jones’ Double Eagle Construction and her helpers from NAWIC
(National Association of Women in Construction) for building our new
eagle cage in time for this event! Along with our sincere
gratitude to Kinsman Foundation for the grant to fund
purchase of the materials, we feel that our new Alaskan bald eagle,
Denali, has gotten a gorgeous new enclosure, thanks to a wonderful
community of supporters.
Our Earth Day event is the culmination of months of volunteer work on
the grounds, cages, and buildings - and helps to start our busy summer
season with our best foot forward. Special thanks to Girl Scout Troop 361 for coming to three work parties, to Brownie Troop 361, Weebelos Pack 52, Alpha Phi Omega, Junction City High School National Honor Society, and the Network Charter School
for help before and on the day. We filled an enormous Lane Forest
Products dumpster with winter debris (and could probably fill another
one with the invasive vegetation and poison oak we’ve been pulling
lately!) - thank you to Lane Forest Products for discounting the cost of that dumpster.
And special thanks to Tim Greenfield and Rob Smart
for their awesome raptor silhouettes that make up our wingspan display
in the education pavilion. They are beautiful as well as
educational. To Gail Perry and friends for the photo booth, new this year. To Pam Brennan for our great volunteer t-shirts. Thank you to Bobby Martini
for all his hard work putting up a sight-blocking fence between us and
our neighbor ... And we also much appreciate the discounted and
donated plants from Duckworth Nursery and Doak Creek Native Plant Nursery
for our ‘good neighbor fence’ behind the pavilion ... may they grow
tall quickly! And last but nowhere near least, our delighted
gratitude to Molecular Probes/Invitrogen for a grant to upgrade our natural history signs, to Dan and Barbara Gleason for all the revised text, artwork, and range maps for those signs, and to Imagine Graphics who donated half their cost and did a really beautiful job! |
