Volunteer Profile

One of our lynchpin volunteers is leaving us!  I know we need to celebrate the milestones in her life - and she just graduated from the University of Oregon with a dual major in Political Science and Art History (graduating fourth in the school of Art and Architecture), with a minor in Outdoor Recreation - but we are also sad that the next step on her life’s journey is not going to be in Eugene.  Loy has been with us for four years, putting in countless hours in animal care and on the education team, where her prior experience with operant conditioning training has helped us all and many birds.  Loy quickly joined the group of core volunteers who are the central nervous system (all the volunteers together are our backbone!) of everything that we do ... coming to work parties and bringing friends along, tackling the yuckiest jobs without complaint, being reliable, solid, and great fun to be around.  We have of course lost volunteers before, as people’s lives change, but Loy will leave one of the biggest holes ever.  Her current plan is to work with Teach for America next year, since though accepted this year, she would have had to leave school before graduation.  Loy - we’ll miss you and we wish you all the best in your Mexico and Central American travels and beyond.
