"Natasha has been our youngest volunteer and spent
her first summer with us just shadowing an adult volunteer. But this last summer
we really put her to work! Though no one under 18 can handle birds, Natasha contributes
a great deal by her solid commitment and hard work. We hope to see her every summer!"Louise Shimmel
and from Natasha:
"It's when you're in a cage and standing not but 10 feet
away from a raptor that you can actually feel and sense the power and beauty of these
majestic birds. Volunteering at the Cascades Raptor Center gives you this awesome feeling
and is also very educational. When feeding and caring for the raptors, you discover that
each bird has its own personality. And it's not just the birds that are great, the staff
at the Raptor Center is a blast to work with, and Louise is wonderful! I loved volunteering
at the Raptor Center and I hope you do too!"

is a native Oregonian
who has been volunteering with CRC since January of 2001. A social
worker by profession, she runs a transition program for women being
released from prison and jail in Eugene. She is a member of the
CRC Education Team and has been glove training birds since November of
2003.
"I joined the
CRC team for several reasons. My daughter had just moved away for
college and although I didn't realize it til later, I was looking to
fill my 'empty nest.' I had also been fascinated with the Red-tailed
hawks along the freeway for many years yet I had a long time fear of
birds which I wanted to conquer.
I can't
imagine my life now without CRC! It has become my spiritual haven and
helps keep me centered in my often crazy world.
There is little that compares to helping a wild
injured bird in its healing and then watching it set free, or the awe
that comes from having a bird on my glove and finally making the
connection of trust."
